Thickening - Water Treatment Residuals

Centrifuge thickening and polymer conditioning to reduce residual volume before dewatering or disposal.

What is Water Treatment Residuals Thickening?

Water treatment residuals (alum sludge, ferric sludge, lime softening sludge) must be thickened before downstream dewatering or disposal to reduce liquid volume and improve dewatering equipment performance. Thickening converts dilute residuals from as low as 0.5% solids to 3–8% solids, dramatically reducing the volume that must pass through dewatering equipment and disposed.

Equipment We Represent

DryCake - Decanter Centrifuges (Hybrid Drive)

  • Hybrid Drive energy recovery technology reduces centrifuge operating costs
  • 4" to 31" diameter range to match any plant size
  • Remote access diagnostics for condition monitoring and troubleshooting
  • Handles alum sludge, ferric sludge, and lime softening residuals

SNF Polydyne - FLOPAM Conditioning Polymers

  • Polymers optimized specifically for water treatment residuals conditioning
  • FLOPAM product line covering the full charge spectrum (anionic, nonionic, cationic)
  • FLOQUIP automated polymer preparation and feed equipment
  • Only polymer supplier with integrated manufacturing, direct field sales, and equipment supply

Applications

Alum Sludge Thickening
Concentrating gelatinous alum residuals before dewatering for volume reduction
Ferric Sludge Thickening
Mechanical thickening of ferric coagulation residuals to reduce disposal volume
Lime Softening Sludge
Thickening calcium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide residuals before recalcination or disposal
Dewatering Feed Preparation
Producing consistent feed solids to belt presses, centrifuges, or screw presses

Why Winschel Environmental?

  • Residuals expertise — Water treatment residuals behave differently from wastewater biosolids — we understand those differences and specify accordingly
  • Energy-efficient centrifuge technology — DryCake's Hybrid Drive reduces centrifuge operating costs compared to conventional designs
  • Chemistry + equipment — SNF polymer supply alongside DryCake mechanical thickening for a complete residuals management solution
  • Virginia coverage — Local support from process evaluation through equipment startup and polymer program optimization
