What is Suspended Growth Biological Treatment?

Suspended growth biological treatment keeps microorganisms mixed in suspension within wastewater — where they consume organic matter, nitrify ammonia, and in advanced configurations, remove nitrogen and phosphorus through anoxic and anaerobic reactions. It's the core of most modern municipal wastewater treatment. Process variations include conventional activated sludge, extended aeration, sequencing batch reactors (SBR), and biological nutrient removal (BNR) — each suited to different plant sizes, effluent requirements, and site constraints.
